Exploring Toulon: A Gem on France's Mediterranean Coast
By Sara Mckay •
What do you get when you combine sun, sea, and a dash of French charm? That would be Toulon, an alluring coastal gem nestled along the Mediterranean. Our journey began aboard the spectacular Virgin Voyages ship, an impressive vision of modern cruising elegance. We landed on Toulon's warm sands on the 22nd of August, 2022, with a clear mission: tan, swim, and indulge in the grandeur of this French Riviera city.
Here's a snapshot I couldn't resist taking of the Virgin Voyages ship docked in Toulon, our beautiful home on the waves, gleaming in the radiant Mediterranean sunshine. Now, that's what I call a good start to a day of adventuring!
Even though my friends and I primarily wanted to soak up the sun and frolic in the inviting blue waters, we soon discovered that Toulon had so much more to offer. One of the best things about this city is its versatility. Yes, we wanted to tan and swim, but boy, were we in for a delightful surprise with the array of things to do in Toulon!
Sure, I could write a novel about lounging on the beach, the feeling of warm sand beneath our toes, and the refreshing sea breeze on our skin. But let me tell you about the off-beach, post-sun-soaking fun that Toulon holds.
So, buckle up, pack your sunnies, and get ready to uncover Toulon's charm. It's not just a destination; it's a lifestyle! Are you ready to live it up, Toulon style?

Historical Overview of Toulon: An Enticing Blend of Time and Tales
Picture this: Toulon, known back in the Roman era as 'Telo Martius', then evolving through the names Telo, Telonium, and finally landing on Toulon. Quite the name game, right? You'd be surprised to know that Toulon got its first shout-out in the “Route from Rome to Arles" by Antoninus in the 2nd century B.C, rolling with the moniker Telone Martio.
Now, what's in a name, you may ask? Well, the scholars got a bit playful here. Some reckon 'Telo' is inspired by the Greek “telaneion," which hints at a 'place of toll' or ‘scaffolding’, while others suggest it nods towards the Gallic god Telonium. Then there's 'Martius', the Roman version of calling something red - probably because Toulon was home to a purple dye-works during the Imperial Age. The name's true origin? Still up for debate, adding a dash of mystery to our sunny coastal city.
Fast forward to post-Roman Empire times and Toulon had its fair share of hard knocks, suffering invasions and plunders by the Arabs between the 8th and 12th centuries. Ownership tag was tossed around a bit too, moving from the Viscounts of Marseilles to Charles of Anjou and his successors, before settling snugly under French rule in 1481.
Toulon truly hit its stride in 1514 when Louis XII took 'home improvement' to the next level, building a massive tower to defend the port. This move promoted Toulon to the leading base of the French fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, becoming Provence's protective big sibling, with Faron ('Lighthouse' or 'look-out') serving as a watch tower for potential threats.
Our city didn't stop flexing though. The defences got a major upgrade under Henri IV and Louis XIV who called in Vauban, the 17th-century equivalent of a five-star general contractor, to beef up the arsenal and fortifications. Toulon then welcomed large shipyards, reaching its prime in the 18th century.
But let's not forget that Toulon knows drama. During WWII, in a heartrending twist, the city witnessed the self-destruction of a significant part of the French fleet right in its harbour, a desperate move to keep it out of German clutches in 1942.
Fast forward to today, Toulon has transformed from its tumultuous past into a dazzling tourist magnet. With captivating points of interest like the 'old city', the sun-kissed beaches, and its vibrant surroundings, Toulon has truly come a long way.
