Discovering Tenerife: Top Spots and Hidden Gems for the Perfect Vacation

By Sara Mckay

Hey everyone, let me take you back to when my best friend, Ciara, and I were just a couple of 18-year-old thrill-seekers embarking on a journey of a lifetime. This wasn't just any journey; it was our first 'grown-up' holiday abroad. A journey that took us far from the comfort of our homes, as we stepped into the exciting unknown.

Having held off the lure of Europe's legal drinking age of 16, we finally decided to commemorate our 18th birthdays with an adventure we'd never forget. Our trusty guide on this expedition? None other than TUI, a household name in travel agencies, renowned for making travel dreams come true across Europe and, indeed, the world.

As one of the major deals for us was an easy ride, and trust me, it was!

Destination? Puerto De La Cruz, a charming paradise tucked away in the vibrant island of Tenerife. This was our last hurrah before University started, and oh, what a summer it was! Today, I'm here to walk you down memory lane, sharing our experiences, the lessons we learned, and painting a picture of a place that still makes us sigh in nostalgia.

Puerto De La Cruz is stunning, with small local shops, and some beautiful colors, it's amazing!

Expect a whirlwind tour of Tenerife's hidden treasures, places you wouldn't find in your everyday travel guide, but ones that etch themselves into your heart forever. We'll also journey through Tenerife's culinary delights, revealing some of the best dining spots we discovered in the northern part of the island.

Of course, no travel experience is complete without a comfortable place to rest your weary feet after a long day of exploration. So, we've got an accommodation guide lined up too, with insights into where we stayed, and where we would recommend you to bunk down.

Yes this is Santa De Cruz, another amazing hotspot for people looking for a beautiful, and warm holiday!

Join us as we reflect on what we loved, what we didn't quite fancy, and what we'd do differently if we could turn back time. We'll even offer you glimpses into the adrenaline-filled rides at Siam Park and the wonders of Loro Parque, one of Europe's largest zoos.

This isn't just a travel guide, it's a trip down memory lane, a story of youthful exuberance and curiosity. We were all young once, eager to explore, ready to take on the world. So buckle up, and let's embark on this unforgettable journey together, through the breathtaking vistas of Tenerife!

A massive whirlpool of adventure, a massive wave pool in Siam Park, stay tuned, as I will have a whole article for it! (courtesy of trip advisor)

Navigating the TUI Tango: Our First Steps into the Charms of Tenerife

Here we are! Ciara and I in our summer outfits, young and ready to explore the stunning Canary Island!

Let's rewind to the start of this adventure. It all began at Ciara's house, our nervous excitement palpable in the air as we prepped for our first independent voyage. I've been fortunate enough to travel before, but for Ciara, every moment was a fresh page in a brand-new travelogue. As for both of us, venturing abroad sans our families? A first!

East Midlands Airport is small, but it's great, and a little known fact, I used to work in the Greggs there! Not anymore though!

The journey started with us hopping onto a flight from East Midlands Airport. A little bird compared to its larger counterparts like Heathrow, Gatwick, and, oh, some of the behemoths stateside, which we'll get to soon, promise!

Book your tickets now!

Not our exact plane! But, this is what a TUI plane looks like, blending with the blue sky, we were ready for the next adventure, and goodbye to rainy England we said!

Navigating this adventure with TUI was a blessing in disguise. The convenience of a smooth check-in, even in a smaller airport, was not lost on us. And then we were off, descending into the captivating world of Tenerife.

Before you get too far into our tale, remember, this was our experience. You are free to pick your path, create your adventure. However, I'd definitely recommend travel agencies like TUI, or JET2 as I mentioned in my Virgin Voyages article. Budget holidays can sometimes be the hidden gems you're looking for!

And who doesn’t love Frankie and Bennys before embarking on our first girls holiday!

Our choice was half-board at the Be Live Tenerife Hotel, snuggled in Puerto De La Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. It promised a fulfilling breakfast and dinner, perfect since we planned on being out and about for lunch. The hotel was a refreshing blend of cleanliness and modern amenities.

From the Tui website itself, it had a quirky pool, lots of sunbeds, and was about a 5 minute walk, so that's right a BLACK SAND BEACH!

But let's be real. The journey from the airport to the hotel was a whopping 3 HOURS on a coach. Not ideal, but hey, transfers, flights, and a generous 22kg baggage allowance each were part of the TUI package, making it worthwhile. A fair warning, the main airport is in the south, so plan your flight timings keeping in mind if you're heading north.

The one glitch in our otherwise pleasant stay was an encounter with a hotel worker who tried to pull off the old sexist trick of saying he "liked my eyes" while quite obviously staring elsewhere. A dampener, but we didn't let it rain on our parade.

The bestie and I, by the pool! Gosh, one bit of advice, skincare, my acne flared up RIGHT after this!

After all, I'm a simple gal, give me a clean bed and a good shower, and I'm set. Anything more is just the cherry on top. And trust me, Tenerife was ready to serve up a whole lot of cherries!

Puerto De La Cruz: Basking in Tenerife's Charming Northern Gem

One of Tenerife’s top rated views, in my opinion!

Puerto De La Cruz, oh how we fell in love with you! This beautiful city in the northern part of Tenerife is truly an unpolished diamond, just waiting to bedazzle you with its charm and history.

You might be wondering, "What's so special about Puerto De La Cruz?" Well, where do I start? Picture this: You're lounging on black volcanic sand beaches, the sun-kissed waves of the Atlantic gently lapping at your feet, while you're sipping on an exquisitely crafted Cosmopolitan, the size of your head, mind you! Yes, they don't hold back on the portions, and my weakness for a good Cosmo was indulged more times than I can count.

Imagine being photographed whilst being asleep, that's me, also yes, I can see the sunburn too!

The city's history is as intriguing as its present. Founded in the 16th century, it grew from a humble fishing village to Tenerife's first tourist hotspot. This heritage is still visible in its beautiful old town, with traditional Canarian architecture lining the picturesque plazas.

I love cobbled streets and statues, and with all the best restaurants and where the location is, I loved it! Felt like a fairytale!

The location of Puerto De La Cruz, nestled under the mighty Mount Teide, offers a cooler climate compared to the southern parts of the island. Speaking of Mount Teide, stay tuned, because we've got quite a story to share about our encounter with Spain's highest peak!

So, TUI did many excursions, and you could climb Mount Tiede, and we did! They provide coach trips to and from, and our very own three course meal, and wine and the stars! Here is Ciara, being a QUEEN and posing!

Now, not everything about Puerto De La Cruz is roses. Like every place, it has its quirks. For example, the cooler climate might not be everyone's cup of tea, or should I say, glass of Sangria. And while the city offers a more laid-back vibe, those seeking bustling nightlife might want to look south.

But let me tell you, our time in Puerto De La Cruz was unforgettable. From the serene moments on the unique black sand beaches to the heartwarming hospitality of the locals, this city has a way of nestling itself in a corner of your heart. And the gigantic cocktails? Well, they're just the icing on the cake!

I’m 4’8, and it's this big!

Under a Canarian Sky: Cosmic Wonders & Twilight Tales on Mount Teide

From the TUI website, just look over the clouds and fall in love even more in this incredible piece of natural history!

Buckle up, folks, because we're about to ascend into a world that's out of this world, quite literally. Mount Teide, Tenerife's crowning glory and Spain's tallest peak, is not just a dormant volcano, it's the gateway to an unforgettable celestial spectacle.

First, a little context about this towering natural wonder. Mount Teide is the third highest volcanic structure and most voluminous in the world after Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Its unique geological footprint, combined with Tenerife's clear skies, makes it one of the best spots globally for stargazing.

A little younger, so the fashion sense wasn’t it, but can you see the beautiful view in the background, and who better than with my bestie?!

But let's get back to our story. The excursion we opted for, aptly named 'Teide by Night' and priced at a reasonable £68 (around $87 for my American friends), turned out to be worth every penny. This trip was magical in more ways than one. Hosted by TUI, the tour promised a journey through breathtaking landscapes, sunset cava toasts, a three-course dinner, and an epic stargazing experience.

As the tour guide talks about the constellations, relax, have your FREE champagne, and fall in love with the stars, and the Earth.

And, let's just say, it delivered on all fronts. As our vehicle trudged its way higher into the national park, the setting sun began painting the volcanic ridges in shades of pink, red, and purple, lending an almost alien beauty to the landscape. The sight was absolutely surreal, something that even the most eloquent words or perfect photographs fail to capture fully.

But the night was only beginning. Dinner was served under the twinkling canvas of the night sky. There, we met an incredibly friendly Belgian family who generously kept topping up my glass with rich red wine. Add to this a surprise serving of free champagne, and it wasn't long before I was seeing stars, figuratively, of course.

Where the restaurant was, they do vegetarian options and meat lovers options. It's been a while so they might even be vegan now, and this picture was the last picture of me being sober LOL!

Now, you're probably wondering, did I end up a little too tipsy? Did I, in a moment of tipsy bravery, take a 'nature break' on Mount Teide? Yes and yes. But hey, we're here to live our best lives, aren't we?

Post dinner, it was time for the pièce de résistance: the stargazing. Guided by a professional, we explored the star-studded canvas of the night sky, spotting constellations that have guided generations of wanderers.

Just genuinely WOW. Pro tip, it was HOT, I should have put suncream on and brought water, but I was so obsessed with the view and holiday I didn’t think so! Please learn from me!

Here's the cherry on top: our multilingual guide effortlessly switched between English, French, German, and Italian, making the experience feel inclusive and well-organized. With TUI, everything was clockwork. The pick-up time, the 24/7 chat line, regular visits from a TUI helper at the hotel – it felt like we were in the safe hands of a seasoned professional, a true blessing for us travel novices!

Pretty much the same, but I swear Ciara has always been STUNNING?! She’s even prettier than the VIEW

In conclusion, if you're planning to visit Tenerife, the Teide by Night experience is an absolute must. And remember, a little tipple under the stars never hurt anybody. It just makes the cosmos look a little friendlier!

A Splash of Adventure: Navigating the Wonders of Siam Park

As you can see I brought myself a Loro Parque hat and I do not regret it!

Fancy a touch of the exotic without leaving European shores? Well, strap in, folks, because we're about to dive into the thrilling world of Siam Park and Loro Parque, two of Tenerife's crown jewels.

When it comes to water parks in Europe, Siam Park is hard to beat. Set against the backdrop of a gorgeous Thai landscape right in Tenerife, this water kingdom is the stuff of dreams, offering an adrenaline-fueled day under the Canarian sun. Not far off, we have Loro Parque, a lush animal haven where you can mingle with fascinating creatures from all over the world. Together, these twin parks serve up a cocktail of fun, excitement, and awe-inspiring sights that'll stick with you long after you've dried off.

Here's a massive aerial view of Siam Park, well part of it, from the TUI excursion website, and wow, it looks great, I didn’t do the big water ride, not a chance

Thanks to TUI, we snagged a Loro Parque and Siam Park twin ticket for £61 (about $79). A stellar deal if you ask us, especially when you consider the variety of experiences that awaited us.

Before you splash out on this ticket, there are a few key points to remember. Firstly, it's a twin deal, which means one person must visit both parks – no splitting up, sorry. Secondly, you've got 15 days to visit the second park after hitting up the first one. And thirdly, keep hold of that voucher! You'll need it to enter the second park.

From the TUI website. Now, I can do big rides, but not like this absolutely not, although I did a small one in Blizzard Beach!

Now, let's talk about our experiences. As a seasoned swimmer, I had a whale of a time at Siam Park, especially in the wave pool. But be warned, it's a bustling place. June, school holidays, or not – expect crowds. Also, here's a pro tip: bring your own flip-flops. The scorching floor can quickly turn a fun day into a foot-frying ordeal. And guess what? A pair of 'emergency' flip-flops will set you back a cool 15 euros.

There's also a lazy river! But trust me, when it gets too crowded, the staff can get a bit rude and pushy, like, dont hurt me!

Travel times are also worth noting. From our hotel, the journey was a good two hours each way to both parks. So be prepared for a bit of a commute. And the food, well, let's just say it's not for the budget-conscious. Think 10 euros for a hotdog, small fries, and a drink combo.

But hey, don't just take our word for it. Check out some TUI reviews. Some folks found the queues too long, especially at Siam Park, even with pre-booked tickets. Others were blown away by the attractions but felt the transport logistics could have been better. And of course, everyone agreed that both parks were amazing places to visit.

Here's the park map, there is something for children, adults, teens, EVERYONE!

Here's the ultimate guide!

In conclusion, if you're planning a trip to Tenerife, we'd highly recommend adding Loro Parque and Siam Park to your itinerary. Yes, it might be a little pricey and crowded at times, but the experience? Absolutely worth it. So, get ready to make a splash and don't forget those flip-flops!

The entrance looks like a beautiful Thai temple. And I LOVE it!) image from website above.

More About Loro Parque: A Walk on the Wild Side in Tenerife

Now, yellow would NEVER be my color of choice, but that's all they had, and hey, I do love a good hat!

Ladies, gents, and nature lovers, if the thought of hanging out with dolphins, birds, and orcas in one of Tenerife's top attractions gets your heart racing, let me tell you about our experience at Loro Parque. Now, you may remember our thrills and spills from Siam Park earlier, but with our handy dandy joint ticket, we traded water slides for wildlife and boy, was it a safari of fun!

From the TUI excursion website, but genuinely. BEST.SHOW.EVER.

This world-class zoo, a mere 15-minute walk from our hotel, was the next stop on our Tenerife adventure. Let me tell you, this park isn't just about the animals (and there are many, ranging from vibrant parrots to majestic tigers) but also about the spectacular shows. And get this, one of the orcas there is deaf and they communicate with it through lights. How cool is that?

As well as Tigers, the Zoo has Gorillas, birds, and red pandas, and loads more!
Sometimes I wonder if they know I want a good picture and purposely avoid me LOL

But enough about us, let's hear from some fellow travelers. A common consensus? The dolphin show rivals those at Orlando's SeaWorld (and yes, we're giving you the side-eye, Sea World). Many were amazed by the up-close-and-personal animal encounters and the free bus ride from Puerto de la Cruz, making the day out stress-free. Some did grumble about long coach journeys and lengthy queues, but hey, good things come to those who wait, right?

Now, onto practical matters. The tickets cost £36 if bought separately but if you're good at math (or even if you aren't), getting the joint ticket with Siam Park is a no-brainer. You save a buck and get double the fun. Yes, you might have to budget a bit extra for food (like Siam Park, prices are a tad steep) but we promise, the experiences are worth every penny.

I don’t know how much it cost to get chosen, but having the dolphins jump over and next to me would be something I remember FOREVER!

Whether you're spending a couple of hours or the whole day there, the park is packed with memorable experiences. My friend Ciara even had the chance to practice her Spanish and she nailed it! And let's not forget the must-have souvenir: we both scored some fabulous hats.

What zoo is complete without some of the best and sassiest penguins!

So, what's the verdict? A resounding two thumbs up from us. If you're planning a visit to Tenerife, do yourself a favor and add Loro Parque to your itinerary. It's a wild ride from start to finish, in the best way possible. Come for the animals, stay for the amazing shows, and leave with a heart full of unforgettable memories. Happy adventuring!

And of course, how could I forget to not add my favorite animal, the meerkat!

Shh! Tenerife's Best Kept Secrets Unveiled

Masca

Ready for a wild adventure? Set your sights on Masca, home to one of the most exhilarating hikes on the island. It's a bit tricky, with its steep paths and heights, but oh, the views! They are absolutely worth every bit of sweat. Just make sure to bring lots of snacks and water. You’ll also have a boat ride to look forward to at the end, taking you to the village of Los Gigantes. Now that's what we call a cool adventure.

Left: Courtesy of trip advisor, this menu gives you a glimpse of what can be had, I do love food, so healthy and tasty food matches the vibe! Right: So very northern! The north airport isn’t commercially used, but maps say from where Ciara and I stayed it's around a 26 minute drive, now that's worth it! For my health of course!

Las Teresitas

Now, let's hit the beach at Las Teresitas. It's a peaceful oasis with calm waters, golden sands, and beach bars galore. And it's only a 15-minute drive from Santa Cruz. If you're craving a magical sunset, however, head to **Playa de Benijo**. This black sand beach is simply stunning, but do be careful with the strong currents. Make sure to try out the local cuisine at the nearby restaurants.

Makika & Co

Hungry again? Step into the tropical oasis that is Makika & Co. Located in the heart of San Cristobal de la Laguna, this café is a real hideaway with its lush vegetation and cozy atmosphere. Their croissants are divine!

Auditorio de Tenerife

For culture vultures, Auditorio de Tenerife is a must-visit. Its architectural beauty will leave you in awe. Enjoy the symphony orchestra or sip a coffee while admiring the spectacular building.

Left: Tripadvisor, but also, WOW Right: A 42 minute drive away, I wish we went, however, I know I am focusing mainly on the North, but that's where I went!

A Fond Farewell to Tenerife: A Memorable Chapter Ends, A New One Begins

Our hotel, Be Live, had some great balconies with some fantastic views!

As we climbed aboard our coach for the homeward journey, I took one last look at the island that had been our playground for the past few days. It was my first holiday independently spent with my bestie, and oh, what a success it was! From dancing like no one's watching on a boat party, to witnessing the majestic beauty of dolphins and whales in their natural habitat, and to meeting some of the planet's most fantastic creatures – tigers, gorillas, and cosmos – it was an adventure like no other.

A view from our pool top hotel! This was a different hotel, as we stayed at a different one for a night! Sorry I can’t remember the name!

Food from the exotic locales we dined in and the cozy, welcoming stays in the North of Tenerife were more than we could have ever asked for. The memories etched in our hearts are just as vibrant as the day we made them, and they'll surely last a lifetime. Even that unfortunate encounter with the rather sexist staff member couldn't tarnish the unforgettable experience Tenerife offered us. We lived, we laughed, we explored, and I can't wait to do it all over again.

Only our view from our balcony, I’m a big lover of nature and look at those mountains!

For my next trip, it'll be to the South of Tenerife, and this time it won't be with my bestie but with my favorite man! On the agenda, a visit to the famed Jungle Park and possibly a splash in Aqualand.

Every step was a magical one, filled with color, look how detailed and colorful this tapestry is! Worth the picture!

Tenerife, for all its wonder, also has a reputation for being pocket-friendly, a haven for those of us fresh out of college (or sixth form), eager to explore the world without breaking the bank. Whether you're after a high-end experience or a budget-friendly escapade, Tenerife doesn't disappoint.

Mind the blur, but here is me in front of the Puerto De La Cruz sign. With the most gorgeous backdrop EVER

I have TUI to thank for making this dream vacation a reality. Their service was excellent, easing all the stress that usually comes with planning a holiday and all within a budget that didn't leave my wallet feeling light.

Reliving my Titanic moment, right before we saw some dolphins, and also, look how clear and blue that water is! UK take notes please.
And naturally, Ciara had to do the same, bathing in the sunlight and making memories of a lifetime, whilst we partied on, before I got to tired of it

So, here's to the memories, the friendships, the laughter, and the wild adventures that made this trip unforgettable. Until next time, Tenerife! My heart is already yearning for more. Stay tuned, folks, for the next chapter in my travel diaries is just around the corner - filled with more adventure, more laughs, and more unforgettable moments. See you on the other side!

And that, everyone, is bye bye from me, at 18, ready to start my university journey, but enjoying the summer Tenerife sun, with the clear blue waters, just a little bit more!

That's all for this post! If you've visited Tenerife and discovered any hidden treasures or have tips to share, I'd be thrilled to hear about them.
