If you've been following my journey, you'll know that I embarked on a romantic summer adventure with my boyfriend Calum to the Italian Lake Garda last June. Our first holiday together, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical.

Our journey to Malcesine started with a flight from Manchester Airport to Verona Airport with Jet2. Just a tip for fellow travelers, Verona is the nearest airport to Lake Garda, so irrespective of whether you're flying from Manchester like we did, or any other part of the world, your first landing spot in Italy would likely be Verona.

Our flight with Jet2 was smooth and uneventful (just the way we like our flights!). On landing, we were excited to start our Italian adventure. But little did we know, the real adventure was just beginning. You see, the next part of our journey involved a coach ride organized by Jet2 from Verona Airport to Lake Garda.

Now, imagine a hot summer day, the temperature nudging 30 degrees Celsius, and you're packed into a coach with a faulty air-conditioning system. Yes, you guessed it right, it was quite torturous. The heat was relentless, and all we could do was fan ourselves with whatever we had at hand and dream about the cool waters of Lake Garda.

But you know what? As soon as we got our first glimpse of Lake Garda, all that discomfort just faded away. It was love at first sight. The shimmering blue waters of the lake, framed by the lush green mountains, was a sight for sore eyes. It was like stepping into a postcard, and we knew instantly that all the travel hassles were worth it.

Malcesine is nestled on the northern shores of Lake Garda, just a 30-minute boat ride away from our stay in Limone. The journey across the sparkling lake was nothing short of a delight, with the fresh lake breeze brushing our faces and the sight of ducks and fishes accompanying us. The fare was a reasonable 15 euros per person, and honestly, I can't think of a more scenic route to take, especially under the scorching 30-degree sun! The ferries run every 30 minutes from 9 am to 7 pm, giving us plenty of time to explore this historic town.

In the end, what I can say is this - getting to Malcesine may involve a bit of travel, but trust me, the journey is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. And once you get that first glimpse of Lake Garda, you'll know it was all worth it.

A Tour of Malcesine

Malcesine Castle

One of the crowning glories of Malcesine has to be its majestic castle, known as the Scaliger Castle (not to be confused with the Scaliger Castle of Sirmione in the south of Lake Garda). This commanding structure, perched on a rocky cliff overlooking Lake Garda, has a history that dates back over a thousand years. Its name comes from the Scaliger family, the Lords of Verona who once ruled over this region in the Middle Ages.

Navigating through the castle, you'll immediately sense its ancient charm. Its stone walls and turrets, shaped by centuries of history, offer a tantalizing glimpse into the past. As you climb the many steps towards the top (and let me tell you, it's quite the workout!), you'll find yourself enveloped in the castle's old-world ambiance. Don't worry if you're not a fan of steps - most of the climb is shady, and the stunning views at the top are absolutely worth it.

From the castle's highest point, you're rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Lake Garda, a view that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. It's easy to see why this castle was of strategic importance back in the day, providing a vantage point to spot potential invaders from miles away. It's a fantastic spot for pictures, so make sure your camera is ready!

Exploring the castle's interior is just as fascinating. For a mere 6 euros per person, you get access to the castle's museum which houses a myriad of exhibits. Here, you'll learn about the local wildlife of Lake Garda, how the lake was formed over millions of years, and more intriguing facts about the castle's history. The museum is a testament to the castle's resilience and its crucial role in the area's heritage.

And a bonus point? Just outside the castle, you'll find a charming shop selling handmade ceramic animals. I couldn't resist and ended up buying a delightful ceramic chicken money bank which I named Charles. He's now my favorite ornament and a cherished reminder of my visit to the Malcesine Castle. (He unfortunately recently fell off my window sill and smashed - pain.)

Old Town Exploration

The charm of Malcesine doesn't end at the castle gates. The town itself, with its winding cobblestone streets, old world architecture, and bustling markets, is a destination in itself. One of my absolute favorite spots was a shop filled with adorable handcrafted ceramic animals. It's here that I found Charles, my beloved ceramic chicken money bank.

Art enthusiasts will be in their element in Malcesine. The town is dotted with art galleries showcasing beautiful oil paintings inspired by the town's history and the picturesque Lake Garda. And, of course, there are the numerous souvenir shops where you can pick up mementos of your visit.

But what I found most refreshing about Malcesine is that despite its tourist appeal, it's not overly commercialized. No one is there trying to push you to buy anything. The shops and their proprietors are more than happy to let you browse at your own pace, which only adds to the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the town.

As the sun goes down, the town takes on a whole new vibe. The bars and restaurants start to fill up, serving up delicious local cuisine paired with some of the finest wines from the region. If you're someone who appreciates a vibrant nightlife, Malcesine definitely won't disappoint.

For the more adventurous spirits, there's paragliding over Lake Garda. While I personally prefer to keep my feet firmly on the ground, watching the paragliders soaring above the lake against the backdrop of a clear blue sky was a sight to behold. Just imagine the thrill of gliding over the lake, taking in the spectacular views from a bird's eye perspective!

If you're an early bird, take the first ride at 9 am to avoid the crowd and catch the lake in the soft morning light.

A little further afield, approximately 4 km from Malcesine, you'll find the charming hamlet of Cassone. This picturesque place welcomes visitors with its small bridges, narrow alleyways, and an undeniable romantic atmosphere. It's a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a quiet afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of Malcesine's town center.

Back in town, there's a network of winding streets waiting to be explored. Each one has its own unique vibe, and as you navigate these paths, you'll stumble upon a myriad of independent shops and eateries that many visitors overlook.
